Sunrise on the bridge

What's right with this picture?

How desperate are Angelenos to leave their cars behind and make tracks en velo? Without fear of mad pollution, road rage or bully buses, I mean...

So desperate that 10,812+ of them met up at the Coliseum yesterday at 5:45 AM to enjoy a
20+ mile bike tour of Los Angeles before the L.A. Marathon officially started. No cars, no lights, no stop signs -- police posted at regular intervals to ensure the streets were free and clear for the cyclists.

Of course, I wouldn't be caught dead out of bed at 5:45 AM on any day -- forget on a Sunday! But somehow...I managed to drag my sleepy self down there with my trusty 1989 Bridgestone MB 6. She served me well on the trails in Berkeley back in the day, and she brought me across the finish line yesterday with ease.

Just Saturday night, some foolish Pistons fan at the ill-fated Clippers game claimed Californians only care about surfing and smoking weed. Not true at all. We here in L.A. find lots of strange ways to spend our time, and we find equally strange ways to explore and celebrate our tacky town!

Ahhhh...that sounds like HEAVEN to me!!! No behemoth cars or SUVs encroaching...sigh...

Of course, I didn't have my bike back then, but I would have gotten out of bed like it was a fishing trip at 3 in the morning to ride the empty streets with fellow...velo-ciraptors?
