Mid-week Holiday

I lucked out last week and got to tag along with pals who'd had the presence of mind to buy tickets to Roman Holiday, screening in the Los Angeles Conservancy's Last Remaining Seats series. One word: Dreamy. How have I never seen this movie? Is it officially pathetic to be overcome with a belated crush on Gregory Peck? It was so perfect, too, because everyone seems to be off having wonderful adventures and changing up everything for the good these days. Kristin's on holiday - again! - and I want to be galavanting around, too. I've been green with envy. Thankfully, this smart, sassy romantic comedy sent me off into a daydreamy holiday of my own right in the middle of the week.

A big draw of the evening was the movie house: the historic downtown Los Angeles Theatre on Broadway. The 2,000+ seats were filled! Built in 1931, it is sadly a shabbier version of its original glory, but before the show the throngs cruised up the stairways, studied the chandeliers, peeked into the "crying room" that once served mothers and weepy babies, and stomped around the long-forgotten bar. Truly an era gone by. My favorite detail: the painted fairies in each corner of the main lobby, watching over incoming guests.

Do you know about the Barbara Stanwyck screenings at the Hammer Museum? I went last weekend and saw "Ladies They Talk About" and "The Lady Eve"--fantastic!!

They're only showing till this Sunday, and they already showed "Double Indemnity", which I missed (darn!).

Alas, I only have 3 days left on my excellent adventure. Currently in Belgium, catching up with my friends from back in the day, and drinking lots of beer as usual!
